Sam began playing brass instruments aged only eight in his local brass band. A year later he took up the tuba and soon found himself attending Wells Cathedral School on a scholarship as a specialist musician.

Sam then became Principal Tuba in the National Youth Orchestra and brass finalist 3 times in the BBC Young Musician of the Year before winning scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music. Sam decided on the Royal Academy of Music and attended for about two years before joining Scottish Opera as Principal Tuba. In 2006 Sam left Scotland for London where he took up the Principal Tuba position with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
