Hiya Bryan,

The answer to your question is YES! We do use pretty much the full range of instruments in our concerts. We mostly use Bb, C and Piccolo though. I have to stay that I'm a bit of a believer of the 'old school' of trumpet playing, i.e. if it doesn't fit on a Bb trumpet try another!! A lot of our contemporary repertoire is played on the C trumpet and I know that Simon has to pick up the Eb for McMillan's 'Adam's Rib'. We also play the Flugelhorn and cornet quite often when the piece dictates.

Perhaps the reason you haven't seen us play anything other than Bb and picc, is most of our arrangements are 'customised' to the specific players (the majority of our arrangements are by us!!). To put it rather crudely, Simon pops in the 'squeelies', and I do the 'shovely' work and between the two of us we have the entire range of the trumpet covered, hence the reason we stick to either Bb or picc.

I'm sure there must be some merit in using the 'in between' trumpets, as you put it. But in my experience the more instruments you have onstage the more tuning problems there are simply due to continually picking up cold instruments.

Glad you love the website, keep in touch!!

Angela
