cornet playing

This message was contributed by jan on 14/12/04.

Help! I've been teaching myself the cornet from the Boosey Brass method for around 5 months and have started practice sessions with a brass band. But... i know it doesn't sound right and am frustrated at not knowing what to do to get a better sound. Would lessons be a good idea, or is it my age ? I'm a young 52(!)and although I've played the piano off and on for years, I'm not sure if I'm holding the instrument correctly or if I'm tonguing in the right way. Also, having been brought up on classical piano, I find the time changes immensely confusing and frequently get lost. Any tips?
