Rush to the French Alps! Well, we could ALL say that........a feeble excuse!
Steve Roberts started the great tradition of FABE introductions, and was an utter natural at it - urbane and witty, and ever able to get himself out of sentences that he was in trouble in, unlike myself, who blundered to a close.

I remember Phil Wilby's first quintet, Classic Images - great piece, horribly dissonant in places (of which I wholly approve), and odd and challenging in structure too. A little old lady at a gig in Droitwich, I think it was, heard it, and at the interval came to me with an incredulous look, hardly believing herself, and said "You know, I ENJOYED that!".
Well, that's what new music is FOR folks.....I'd find an obvious and twee tune far more insulting than something new and challenging, myself. And you are right, there is no point whatsoever in hearing a new piece once - they only give their secrets after repeated hearings - if they're any good......
Anyway, there we are.
